Chasing Watercolour Dreams

The Visionary Projects is delighted to be hosting the "Chasing Watercolour Dreams" travel workshop with Australian artist Kelogsloops in Los Angeles.

Hieu Nguyen, more commonly known online under the alias ‘kelogsloops,’ is a portrait watercolour artist from Australia. This workshop will focus on learning the fundamentals of watercolour, including application, colour mixing and techniques to ultimately create expressive watercolour portraits from reference and observation. Students will be taught the foundations of watercolour, before exploring advanced watercolour techniques to encourage developing one’s own personal style as well as an understanding of composition.




Please arrive in Los Angeles on
Wednesday, 27th February
and depart on Monday, 4th March.

These workshops are exclusively small scale, in a private studio space.
Each person will receive one-on-one time/instruction from the artist.
All Art Supplies will be provided!

Each day there is a full breakfast buffet catered at the studio.
Lunch will be also provided in the same catered buffet style.
We will also have several options for both vegan + vegetarians.

Day 1: Thursday, 28 February
WatercoloUr & Personal Technique

  • Morning: 10:00am - Personal Intro Discussions & Group Breakfast
  • Goals: Building the basic foundations and techniques of watercolour to equip all skill ranges with necessary techniques to start painting. Throughout the day, exercises and subject matter will be given to paint. For example, painting a simple cat from using purely wet on wet techniques, and a bird from purely wet on dry, ending with something that uses both wet on wet and wet on dry to show the versatility of watercolour techniques at your disposal.

  • Discussion: Finding, developing & mastering your style

Day 2: Friday, 1 March
Colour + Skin Mixing

  • Morning: 10:00am - Breakfast
  • Goals: Start building upon basic techniques and start developing an understanding of color mixing, color theory and transparency using water. This is to give a way to create the colors at their disposal, and also to be able to start giving an understanding of how layering and glazing works. Main exercises will be to create a color chart, transparency charts, skin mixing charts, and then a basic portrait.

Day 3: Saturday, 2 march
Advanced Techniques

  • Morning: 10:00am - Breakfast
  • Goals: Develop and encourage exploration & personalization of techniques and the general painting process - by showing a more in-depth, advanced analysis and practice of the basic techniques. Creating your own personal and powerful style of portraiture. Main exercise of the day will be on layering and glazing, building upon skin layers and how to start creating portraits.

Day 4: sunday, 3 march
Advanced Portraiture

  • Morning: 10:00am - Breakfast
  • Goals: How to compose a compelling image and to ultimately execute a portraiture piece from reference or from direct observation. Utilising watercolour techniques learnt to stylise.
  • An introduction to mixed media beyond watercolour: considering mediums such as ink, gold leaf, pastel, acrylic etc.
  • Composition

  • Discussions: Making it as an Artist Today / Social Media

  • Day Ends: 5:00pm

Once the workshop is filled, you will be invited into a private Facebook Group to meet everyone participating beforehand. This is where a lot of information about the workshop will be shared and we can coordinate what will be happening.

You do not have to be a professional artist - just come in with the right mindset, be ready to learn and meet people from all over the world. You will finish this workshop with a new tribe:)

The Visionary Projects is taking this event to Southern California.
Everything is set up for you to work: tables, easels, art supplies, the list goes on. All you have to do is show up with your art essentials, a good notebook and a camera.

During this workshop, we create individual workstations for all participants, as well as a demonstration & lecture space for the instructor. Aside from a gourmet breakfast and lunch - endless coffee, wine and snacks will be provided throughout each day of the workshop.

  • If you withdraw from the trip after making your initial deposit (in the full or half amount), you will receive a 50% refund of your deposit up until 90 days to the event.
